Giống như những tựa game Souls tiền nhiệm, Dark Souls III sẽ đưa người chơi đến một thế giới huyễn ảo đầy bí ẩn, nơi đầy rẫy những quái vật khủng khiếp sẵn sàng “làm gỏi” người chơi. Tất nhiên, game sẽ có cho mình độ khó “kinh hoàng” đã làm nên thương hiệu của dòng game Souls.
Bên cạnh những điểm kế thừa về bối cảnh của game, hệ thống vũ khí, phép thuật cũng như lối chơi đầy thử thách, Dark Souls III cũng có cho mình những nét riêng như tính năng “Ready Stance” mang đến cho người chơi cơ hội gây sát thương cao hơn cho kẻ địch. Hệ thống di chuyển của nhân vật cũng được làm lại để nhắm đến những trận chiến với tốc độ cao hơn, mãn nhãn hơn.
Theo chia sẻ của Hidetaka Miyazaki – cha đẻ dòng game JRPG Souls đồng thời cũng là người đứng đầu From Software vào thời điểm hiện tại – Dark Souls III sẽ đánh dấu ”ngả rẽ” của dòng game Dark Souls và nhiều khả năng sẽ là tựa game Souls cuối cùng của From Software trong giai đoạn “nắm quyền” của ông.
