This release is standalone and also contains the updated main game.

Whistleblower starts the story that led to Outlast, and stretches past the
events of the first game to show the true final chapter in the story of
Mount Massive Asylum.
Outlast: Whistleblower follows the story of Waylon Park, the software
engineer under contract with the Murkoff Corporation who emails journalists
around the world - including Miles Upshur - at the beginning of Outlast.
You'll meet Waylon a few weeks into his time at Mount Massive, during which
he has been unable to even contact his wife and son thanks to strict
security protocols. Having developed a deep-seated distrust of the
profit-motivated scientists and doctors leading dangerous and irresponsible
experiments on their patients, Waylon ends up setting events in motion that
lead to the unmasking of Mount Massive's rotten core.

Whistleblower - phần nội dung tải về đầu tiên dành cho tựa game kinh dị Outlast của hãng Red Barrels đã thay đổi kế hoạch phát hành ban đầu từ tháng 4 sang ngày 6/5 dành cho PC, PS4 - thông tin mới được công bố thông qua Twitter.
Lý do trì hoãn như thường lệ là để Red Barrels có thêm thời gian chăm chút, hoàn thiện hơn cho bản mở rộng và khắc phục lỗi. Nhà đồng sáng lập studio Philiippe Morin cho biết đội ngũ phát triển cảm thấy việc lùi lại thời gian phát hành thêm một tháng là cần thiết để mang đến trải nghiệm hấp dẫn hơn.
Trong Outlast người chơi vào vai Miles Upshur - nhà báo tự do sau khi nhận một khoản tiền bí ẩn đã tìm đến bệnh viện bỏ hoang Mount Massive nhằm điều tra những sự kiện bất thường nơi đây. Còn đối với Whistleblower, trò chơi sẽ diễn ra ở mốc thời gian trước đó cùng với chính nhân vật đã hối lộ Miles, đồng thời cũng là người chứng kiến toàn bộ những sự kiện đã xảy ra trong nhà thương điên khiến nó trở thành một nơi rùng rợn như chúng ta đã biết ở Outlast.
"Vài tuần đã trôi qua kể từ khi Waylon Park đến với nhà thương điên Mount Massive, nơi mà an ninh nghiêm ngặt tới mức anh không được phép trò chuyện cả với vợ con.
