Need for Speed II (1997) mang đến cho người chơi những mẫu xe hiếm và lạ như Ford Indigo… cùng những đường đua trải dài từ Bắc Mỹ, châu Âu sang châu Á, châu Úc. Kiểu đua mới KnockOut xuất hiện lần đầu tiên, trong đó người về cuối mỗi vòng đua sẽ bị loại và các vòng đua sẽ kết thúc khi chỉ còn một tay đua duy nhất. NFS II có gameplay theo xu hướng thiên về arcade với những màn chơi được thiết kế phức tạp với sự xuất hiện của đường tắt – yếu tố tạo nên lợi thế cho game thủ thông thuộc đường đua. Phiên bản NFS Special Edition được bổ sung thêm một số mẫu xe, đường đua mới.
