Tính đến thời điểm hiện tại, dòng game Call of Duty đã xuất hiện trên thị trường được 9 năm. Một khoảng thời gian không dài nhưng bằng ấy cũng đủ để Call of Duty xây dựng nên một tượng đài bất tử ở trong làng game. Đến hẹn lại lên, mùa đông năm nay Activision sẽ cho ra mắt một đứa con tinh thần nữa, trở thành sản phẩm thứ 9 của dòng game nổi tiếng này, đó là Call of Duty Black Ops 2.

Black Ops 2 được phát triển bởi Treyarch, cùng nhà sản xuất với một số game trước đấy như Call of Duty 3, Call of Duty World at War và Call of Duty Black Ops. Activision cũng đã chính thức xác nhận game sẽ chính thức phát hành vào ngày 13/11.2012 trên các hệ máy PC, Xbox 360, PS3.

Bối cảnh chính của game sẽ là trong tương lai không xa. Tại hội nghị E3 năm 2012, người ta có thể thấy được nhiệm vụ trong bản demo diễn ra tại thành phố Los Angeles. Activision hứa rằng game sẽ "vượt xa ranh giới của những điều mà người hâm mộ đang mong chờ" và "đẩy người chơi vào tương lai khá gần, cuộc chiến tranh lạnh của thế kỉ 21, nơi mà công nghệ và vũ khí đã hội tụ lại, tạo nên một thời kì mới của chiến tranh".

Trong game sẽ xuất hiện gương mặt của một nhân vật cực kì quen thuộc với nhưng ai đã từng chơi Call of Duty: Black Ops, trung sĩ Frank Woods. Tuy nhiên chủ yếu nội dung câu chuyện sẽ xảy ra vào năm 2025 và xoay quanh nhân vật David Mason, con trai của Alex Mason.

Đến năm 2025, Nước Mỹ bị lôi cuốn vào một cuộc chiến tranh lạnh thời kì hiện đại nhằm tranh tranh giành nguồn tài nguyên quý giá nhất trên hành tinh – các nguyên tố đất hiếm. Khủng bố công nghệ cao cũng đóng vai trò quan trọng trong nội dung câu chuyện. Trong Black Ops 2, một tổ chức khủng bố đã đột nhập được vào hệ thống máy bay không người lái của Mỹ, sử dụng vũ khí mạnh nhất của quân đội để chống lại chính đất nước này.

Trong Black Ops 2, nội dung câu chuyện sẽ được phân nhánh ra giống như thể loại game RPG. Có những nhiệm vụ bắt buộc người chơi phải thất bại, có những nhiệm vụ có thể thất bại hoặc không, tất cả chỉ để nhằm mục đích ngăn chặn trùm khủng bố Menendez đạt được mục đích của hắn.Treyarch cũng đã đảm bảo về nhiệm vụ phi tuyến tính với khả năng chơi lại nhiều lần.

Theo như tạp chí Official Xbox, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 sẽ có những kết thúc khác nhau.
